3 Tips to Help Relieve Bad Breath

All of us have bad breath occasionally. But it’s usually the result of consuming smelly foods like garlic and onions. This kind of bad breath is easy enough to remedy - you pop a breath mint in your mouth to mask the odor until you can get home to your toothbrush and mouthwash.

But what if you have chronic bad breath and friends or coworkers instinctively back away when they speak to you? If you experience chronic bad breath, here are a few tips for freshening your breath from top Tuscon dentist Dr. Michael Allen.

Tips for Fresh Breath:

  1. Rinse Your Mouth after Every Meal: You know that you need to brush and floss twice a day, but you may not realize that rinsing after meals is a very effective defense against bad breath. Rinsing with water gets rid of the acids and sugars on your teeth, which can prevent the acid from attacking your teeth and causing cavities.
  2. Brush Your Tongue: The majority of bacteria in your mouth live and breed on the tongue’s rough surface. Brushing your teeth is incredibly important because it removes bacteria from your teeth. However, in just a few hours the bacteria that sits on your tongue will transfer to your teeth. Brushing eliminates these bacteria and helps to prevent bad breath.
  3. Drink Lots of Water: Saliva is nature’s toothbrush, and it helps flush away bacteria and food debris that linger in your mouth and tongue and cause a foul odor. Dry mouth (xerostomia) can occur for a number of reasons including tobacco use, stress, diabetes, cancer therapy and the medications you take. In addition to staying hydrated, you can stimulate the production of saliva by sucking on a hard, sugar-free candy or using xylitol gum to quench dry mouth.

Schedule a Dental Exam in East Tucson

These are all effective ways to combat persistent bad breath. The best place to start, however, is to make an appointment with a top dentist in Tucson like Dr. Michael Allen. He will perform an examination to see if there are any underlying oral health conditions that are contributing to chronic bad breath.
