Is Teeth Whitening Safe?

Woman Getting Teeth Whitening in tucson

If you want to refresh a dull, discolored smile, teeth whitening is the way to go! And in the hands of a professional, teeth whitening is a safe procedure. Over-the-counter whiteners used as directed are also safe, although they won’t produce the dramatic results professional treatment does. Unfortunately, OTC whiteners have the potential for misuse that can damage your teeth.

Which is Safer – Carbamide or Hydrogen Peroxide?

Research over the years shows that, when used in low concentration, the peroxide in whiteners are safe to use as prescribed. The concentrations most commonly used by dentists is 35 percent hydrogen peroxide for in-office treatment and 10 percent carbamide peroxide for at-home whitening.

The difference between hydrogen and carbamide peroxide is that a low concentration of carbamide remains active for up to 10 hours and doesn’t damage tooth enamel. On the other hand, hydrogen peroxide is more acidic and only stays active for about an hour, so a dentist must supervise your treatment.

How Your Dentist Protects Your Teeth

However, you should know that it’s common to experience some sensitivity with either level of whitening. To protect your gums during an in-office treatment, your dentist covers them with a thick gel. Another benefit of professional whitening is that you receive a customized whitening tray that conforms closely to your teeth, keeping the gel on your teeth and away from your gums.

Call and Ask Our 85749 Office about KöR Whitening

At Sabino Hills Family Dentistry, we are pleased to offer KöR professional whitening that uses a proprietary formula to “plug” the tiny holes in your teeth that cause sensitivity. Instead of treating the symptoms of sensitivity, KöR helps prevent it.

KöR teeth whitening in Tucson, AZ also gets your teeth dramatically whiter than other professional treatments and permanently lifts stains from your teeth. Your teeth are also less prone to staining after KöR treatment, and you can easily maintain the results with monthly touchups at home.

Please call our office today to arrange an appointment to learn more about KöR whitening and how it can rejuvenate and refresh your smile.
