5 Major Connections between Gum Disease and Your Overall Health

If you have been hearing a lot about gum disease lately, there’s a good reason; according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, half of all American adults over 30 have some degree of gum disease. For adults over 65, the rate increases to 70 percent.

Periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory disease that attacks the gums and supporting structures of your teeth, and without treatment can result in tooth loss. But significant research also shows that gum disease is linked to other inflammatory diseases such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

Periodontal Disease and the Oral-Systemic Link

Your mouth is always full of bacteria, and without proper oral hygiene and regular professional cleanings, they cling to your teeth around the gum line where your teeth and gums meet and can cause periodontal infection.

And this isn't just about your gum health, because numerous studies in the past few years link the presence of bacteria and inflammation to serious physical problems:

  • Heart disease
  • Respiratory disease
  • Diabetes
  • Dementia
  • Pre-term low birth-weight babies

Prevention Is the Key to Fighting Gum Disease

Men tend to be more prone to gum disease as are smokers, but everyone has the potential for developing a periodontal infection. There is only one solution to minimizing your risk, and that is prevention.

There’s a good reason why your dentist recommends six-month visits for exams and cleanings; these intervals allow us to stay a step ahead of the disease and provide you with the tools and information you need to manage your oral health.
