How much do you believe you know about maintaining good oral health? Many people think they have a good grasp of what they need to do to support a healthy smile. But a recent worldwide survey indicates that a large gap exists between the facts and what people believe to be true.
Myth 1: Brush Your Teeth Immediately after Every Meal
An average of 50% of individuals surveyed believes that brushing teeth their right after a meal is good for their oral health.
However, the truth is that sugars and acid in the foods you eat break down enamel for as long as 20 minutes after eating. Interrupting this process with brushing can actually cause small particles of enamel to get carried away. The American Dental Association recommends waiting for 30 minutes after meals before you brush to protect tooth enamel.
Myth 2: Rinse Your Mouth with Water Immediately after Brushing
About 70% of those interviewed for the survey believe it’s important to rinse with water after brushing.
The fact is that you should avoid rinsing with water because the longer the fluoride in the toothpaste stays in your mouth, the more you get out of its preventive effects.
Myth 3: Drinking Fruit Juice is Healthier Than Sodas
About half of those surveyed believe that drinking fruit juice instead of soda is a healthier choice.
Bacteria in your mouth feed on sugar, and they don’t much much care where it comes from. For optimal dental health, limit your intake of all sugary drinks, including fruit juices.
