How Much Sugar Is in Your Child's Favorite Drink?
You want your child to enjoy good oral health, so you conscientiously watch what they eat and drink.
We applaud your efforts! If there’s one thing we’ve learned through practicing children’s dentistry at our Tucson dental office, it is that kids need to be monitored to ensure that they are making healthy choices.
Sugar Content in Beverages
You probably know that sugary drinks like colas and other sodas are bad for your child’s teeth. But would you be surprised to know that drinks you might consider to be healthy, like fruit smoothies and energy drinks, actually contain more sugar than sodas?
Of course, in a perfect world, your child wouldn’t consume any sugar in a beverage. Alas, it’s not a perfect world, so here’s a little quiz to get you thinking about the healthiest drinks for your child.
Out of the following, which do you think is highest in sugar content?
- Flavored Milk
- Energy Drink
- Sports Drink
- Low-calorie Sports Drink
- Sweetened Coffee Drink
- Fruit Smoothie
As you might guess, the low-calorie sports drink is the lowest, at seven teaspoons of sugar each in a twelve-ounce serving. Yes, we said SEVEN TEASPOONS, but it’s not the highest in sugar content by a long shot. All the other beverages listed have at least ten teaspoons of sugar per serving, with sweetened coffee drinks topping the list at fourteen teaspoons.
Knowledge Is Power!
If you have been allowing your child to consume any of these beverages, please don’t be hard on yourself. Manufacturers of these drinks have plenty of tricks up their sleeves to make you believe that their drinks are a healthy alternative to sodas. But knowledge is power, and now you have a guideline to help you and your child make healthy choices.
We’re always happy to take the time to help parents and kids learn what's needed to maintain a healthy smile. If you would like to find out more about dentistry for kids and the services we offer at our Tucson dental office, please give us a call!
